Hello from Wyong Creek Public School where students are trying to stop platypuses from drowning in yabby traps. These yabby traps or ‘opera house traps’ are cheap but it’s illegal to use them in waterways in NSW where there are Platypus which is all the rivers and creeks east of the Newell Highway. Platypus drown in about 2 minutes when they go in to get the yabbies out of the nets but can’t get out. Most people are unaware of the problem and so the kids here are spreading the word and hopefully setting an example for kids in other schools. This blog is where we will put information, news and resources to help platypus.
